Practice History

Our practice is older than the NHS itself, and we are proud of our history and tradition of serving the people of Pontefract.

The first surgery was opened in Belks Court as a husband and wife partnership between Drs. Gerald and Hilda Burnet. In later years their daughter also joined the partnership making it a true family affair. The practice was managed for fifty years by the late Miss Agatha Waterhouse. She was a little gentle lady with a very big heart.

On the retirement of the Burnett’s the practice was taken over by Dr. Dewes, Dr. Kidd, and a young mother of three Dr. Jean Lewis, who was later to become senior partner, and oversaw the move of the practice to its Stuart Road premises in 1984.

Over the years many doctors, nurses and administrative staff have dedicated themselves to the practice, and helped make it what it is today. Then, as now, the prime motivation was always the health and well being of our patients.
